World models, or world simulators, are making waves in the AI world. Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs raised $230 million to develop “large world models,” while DeepMind hired a creator of OpenAI’s video generator, Sora, to work on “world simulators.” But what exactly are these world models?

## Modeling the world

Inspired by human mental models, world models aim to understand the abstract representations of the world around us. Just like how our brains predict the trajectory of a baseball to hit a fastball, world models allow subconscious reasoning aspects that some believe are essential for human-level intelligence.

## High hurdles

Despite the promise of world models, there are technical challenges to overcome. Training and running world models require massive computational power, and biases from training data can affect their performance. Overcoming these challenges could lead to breakthroughs in virtual world generation, robotics, and AI decision-making.
