U.K. authorities recently made a big move, arresting four individuals suspected of hacking into top British retail stores like Marks & Spencer, Harrods, and the Co-op earlier this year. The National Crime Agency disclosed that a 20-year-old woman, two 19-year-old men, and a 17-year-old youth were apprehended for their alleged involvement in hacking, blackmail, money laundering, and organized crime.

Hacking Spree Unveiled
Since April, these hackers have been wreaking havoc by infiltrating the Co-op and later Marks & Spencer to steal customer data. These cybercriminals, known as Scattered Spider, are experts in using impersonation and deception techniques to manipulate call centers and company help desks into giving them access to sensitive networks.

Ransomware Drama Unfolds
The hackers used this access to assist a ransomware group called DragonForce in deploying their malicious software on Marks & Spencer’s network. Fortunately, the Co-op managed to dodge the ransomware attack by taking down its network before the hackers could unleash the malware. Harrods also successfully thwarted a significant part of the cyberattack.
