The company initiated a crackdown last year targeting spammy and unoriginal material, such as the repetitive use of third-party photos, videos, or text. This strategy is designed to prioritize original creator content within feeds and push back against low-quality, AI-generated posts that impact the platform’s reputation.

Impact on Creator Monetization

Maintaining a high standard for content is essential for Facebook’s viability as a creator hub. Management indicates that if unoriginal content and automated “slop” overshadow authentic voices, the platform’s ability to facilitate monetization and attract top-tier creators will diminish.

Performance Metrics and Impersonation Trends

According to Meta, these enforcement efforts led to a significant increase in engagement. Views and time spent watching original content on Facebook approximately doubled during the second half of 2025 compared to the previous year.

Progress has also been reported in the removal of fraudulent entities. Meta confirmed the removal of 20 million accounts last year, resulting in a 33% decline in impersonation reports specifically targeting high-profile creators.

As part of the update, Meta has revised Facebook’s content guidelines to provide a stricter definition of originality. Content is now categorized based on specific production criteria:

  • Original Content: Material filmed or produced directly by a creator, or Reels that meaningfully remix existing content by adding analysis, discussion, or new information.
  • Unoriginal Content: Material involving minor edits, re-uploads, or low-value changes such as adding borders or captions. These posts will be deprioritized in the algorithm as they fail to differentiate from the source material.
