In an effort to combat abuse and fake engagement, X, owned by Elon Musk, is revoking access to key features of its developer API for users on the free plan. Now, free users will no longer be able to like posts on behalf of a user or follow other users using the API.

The company states that these changes aim to safeguard X’s platform from spam, bots, and manipulative activities that can harm the user experience.

Developers on paid plans such as Basic, Pro, or Enterprise tiers will not be affected. These plans offer more capabilities, higher rate limits, and support for a wider range of features.

While limiting access to common actions on X could reduce abuse, it may also encourage developers with legitimate businesses or projects to upgrade to paid plans.

Under Musk’s leadership, X has implemented significant changes to its API platform, including ending free access without much warning to developers initially, then later allowing some free usage. With the introduction of new API pricing in spring 2023, it became evident that the company was focused on revenue generation, as the basic plan only supported “good bots” – automated accounts providing useful information like weather alerts.

Last October, X raised the prices for its basic tier from $100 to $200 per month and introduced higher limits.
