Rumman Chowdhury, a data scientist, nonprofit founder, and former director of Twitter’s machine ethics team, didn’t hold back when criticizing Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at SXSW. She expressed concerns about Musk’s influence on the U.S. government and the impact of his management style on federal agencies.
Chowdhury highlighted the consequences of Musk’s drastic staff reductions and chaotic approach to management. Drawing parallels to her experience at Twitter after Musk’s acquisition of the platform, she emphasized the negative effects of his leadership on organizational culture.
The data scientist also raised issues with Musk’s use of Twitter, now X, as a platform for promoting his own ideology. She criticized Musk for turning X into a propaganda tool and questioned his behavior on the platform compared to former Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey.
Tech and VC heavyweights have joined the Disrupt 2025 agenda, but Musk’s presence on X continues to be a topic of concern. Reports have shown how Musk spreads misleading information and false claims on the platform, raising questions about X’s fact-checking system and the spread of misinformation.
