OpenAI is set to contribute to the development of an enormous 5-gigawatt data center campus in Abu Dhabi, potentially becoming a major tenant in what could be one of the largest AI infrastructure projects globally. This initiative, in partnership with G42, a tech conglomerate based in Abu Dhabi, is part of OpenAI’s ambitious Stargate project, aiming to establish massive data centers worldwide to support AI development.
Huge Data Center Campus in Abu Dhabi
The planned data center in Abu Dhabi would cover an impressive 10 square miles and require power equivalent to five nuclear reactors, surpassing any existing AI infrastructure projects by OpenAI or its competitors. This Middle Eastern counterpart of OpenAI’s Stargate project is expected to exceed the capacity of their U.S. campus, showcasing the company’s commitment to advancing AI technologies on a global scale.
U.S.-UAE AI Collaborations and Concerns
The growing AI partnerships between the U.S. and UAE have sparked concerns among lawmakers, particularly regarding G42’s connections with entities like Huawei and concerns about potential access to advanced U.S. technology by China. Despite these concerns, OpenAI’s collaboration with G42 continues, with Microsoft even investing $1.5 billion in G42 and joining its board of directors.
These developments highlight the complex nature of global AI collaborations and the strategic investments being made to drive innovation in artificial intelligence technology.
