U.S. President Donald Trump is set to issue yet another extension to determine the future of TikTok, extending it by 90 days, as announced by the White House. The current extension, signed in April, was scheduled to expire on Thursday, June 19.
Further Extension to Keep TikTok Operational
“President Trump will sign an additional Executive Order this week to keep TikTok up and running,” stated White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt in a statement to CBS News.
“As he has reiterated, President Trump is keen on preventing TikTok from going dark. This 90-day extension will be utilized by the Administration to ensure the closure of a deal that guarantees the safety and security of American users’ data,” she added.
Legal Battles and Executive Orders
In January, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a law to ban TikTok, causing app stores and service providers in the U.S. to withdraw support for the app. Shortly after taking office, Trump signed an executive order to postpone the ban in order to explore a potential deal with ByteDance for the divestment of its U.S. business. Subsequently, on April 4, he issued a 75-day extension to maintain the operation of the short video app.
