Reddit users in the United Kingdom are now obligated to verify their age in order to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content.
### Compliance with Online Safety Regulations
The implementation of age verification requirements follows the introduction of the U.K.’s Online Safety Act (OSA), which mandated new measures for platforms to prevent children from being exposed to harmful content such as pornography and material promoting self-harm.
### Verification Process and Restricted Content
Reddit has partnered with the third-party service Persona to verify users’ age, requiring individuals to provide a picture of their government-issued identification documents or take a selfie. Reddit ensures that it will not have access to these images, storing only the user’s verification status and date of birth.
Content deemed inappropriate for users under 18, including sexually explicit posts, content promoting suicide and eating disorders, and hate speech based on various characteristics, will be hidden from view.
### Privacy Concerns and User Compliance
Critics have expressed concerns regarding the security and privacy implications of private companies collecting and retaining users’ sensitive identification documents. In response to the OSA’s updates, Reddit has announced the mandatory age verification for users in the U.K., aligning with the regulatory requirements.
