Backlog in Commerce Department halts Nvidia’s H20 chip licenses

Challenges for Nvidia to Sell AI Chips in China

In July, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick approved chipmakers like Nvidia to resume selling certain AI chips in China. However, Nvidia has not yet received a license to sell its H20 AI chips, as reported by Reuters.

Backlog in Licensing Applications

The U.S. Department of Commerce is facing delays in processing licensing applications, including Nvidia’s, due to internal turmoil. This is primarily caused by a staffing shortage and breakdown in communication with the industry, according to Reuters.

Amidst these challenges, national security experts are advising the Trump administration to prevent Nvidia from selling its H20 AI chips to China for national security reasons.
