MRIs are essential for surgeons, yet they have limitations, especially in guiding procedures. The current process involves placing the patient in the machine for imaging, then removing them to advance a needle slowly. This is inefficient.

Robotics in Surgery

Bay Area-based MDC aims to revolutionize minimally invasive surgery using robotics. However, traditional robotics cannot operate inside an MRI due to certain elements.

Challenges and Solutions

MDC’s innovative robotic system for MRI procedures avoids using elements that interfere with the machine’s operation. The system relies on high stiffness, low friction hydraulic transmissions and actuators powered by water.

Future Prospects

MDC’s focus is on biopsies and ablations initially, with plans to expand to other minimally invasive procedures. The system offers dexterous control to physicians, enhancing capabilities beyond current practices.

Recently graduated from SOSV’s HAX accelerator, MDC has raised $1.2 million in pre-seed funding and is making strides in the field of robotic surgery within MRI environments.
