A recent incident at the annual NeurIPS AI conference has sparked criticism not for the opinions shared about AI, but for a comment made about a Chinese student. MIT Media Lab professor Rosalind Picard came under fire for including a slide in her keynote presentation that quoted an excuse from a “Chinese student who is now expelled from top university,” suggesting that the student claimed, “Nobody at my school taught us morals or values.” The slide also contained a note from Picard stating, “Most Chinese who I know are honest and morally upright.”

The incident caused a stir among attendees, with Google DeepMind scientist Jiao Sun calling out the racial bias in the presentation and questioning how such a comment could be made at NeurIPS. Following the backlash, both Picard and the NeurIPS organizers issued apologies, acknowledging the inappropriate nature of the reference to the student’s nationality.

Moving forward, the incident serves as a learning experience for Picard, who expressed regret for the unnecessary and negative associations caused by her words. She is open to suggestions on how to make amends and is committed to being more mindful in her future presentations.
