Adobe is stepping up its game by introducing new AI-powered image-editing and enhancement features to Photoshop through its Firefly models. The company announced that it is rolling out a feature to upscale images, blend objects seamlessly, and improve object removal capabilities.
Generative Upscale is a new feature that allows users to enhance images up to 8 megapixels, perfect for restoring old photos, preparing images for printing, or adapting assets for different platforms. Another exciting feature on the horizon is Project Perfect Blend, set to launch in 2024, which focuses on color correction, shadow adjustments, and lighting enhancements for newly added objects in an image.
Now, under the Harmonize moniker, Photoshop users can effortlessly place objects in a scene, remove backgrounds, and let Firefly models fine-tune color, lighting, shadows, and visual tones to seamlessly integrate the object into the environment. The object-removal tool has also been revamped to focus solely on removing the object and filling the gap with the background, eliminating unwanted artifacts in the image.
In a demo observed by TechCrunch, Adobe showcased the improved object removal tool successfully replacing a small bowl of pico de gallo with the background, avoiding the previous issue of adding a green blob. Additionally, small enhancements such as better asset management and the ability to select the preferred Firefly model version while using AI features have been added to Photoshop.
According to Shambhavi Kadam, senior director of product management for Photoshop, these new features aim to address pain points in workflows for photographers, designers, and content creators, streamlining processes and tackling time-consuming tasks. The Generative Upscale, Harmonize, and improved object-removal features are currently available in beta for Photoshop on desktop and web, with Harmonize also accessible through the new Photoshop iOS app via an early access program.
