X has announced that it will now be labeling parody or satire profiles to distinguish them from other accounts. This decision comes after instances where users, including news presenters, mistook posts from parody accounts as genuine statements from the real individuals or organizations.

The new label will be visible on both the accounts and the posts themselves. According to X, the purpose of these labels is to increase transparency and prevent users from being misled into thinking that these accounts are actually affiliated with the entities being parodied.

Previously, a couple of reverse engineers had already pointed out that X was working on implementing these labels. Currently, users on X have the option to apply the label themselves by navigating to Settings and Privacy > Your account > Account information and selecting the “Parody, commentary and fan account” option.

The social network plans to make these labels mandatory for parody accounts in the near future. While X prohibits impersonation, it does allow parody, commentary, and fan accounts as long as they comply with the platform’s guidelines.
