It’s been a long time coming, but Final Cut Pro has finally made the leap to version 11. After 13 years of anticipation, Apple is no longer messing around. The new software is now available for download, with existing users receiving it as a free update and new customers having to pay $300 after a 90-day trial period.

The Big AI Update

The reason for the jump to 11? Two letters: AI. Apple is now using artificial intelligence to power new features in Final Cut Pro. One of the standout features is Magnetic Mask, which allows for easy cropping of people and objects without the need for a green screen. This powerful tool gives editors more flexibility to customize backgrounds and environments, as well as control and stylize each project with precision.

Another key AI feature is Transcribe to Captions, which automatically adds text to Final Cut’s timeline. Powered by an in-house language model, this feature makes it easier to create captions for videos.

Mixed-Reality Editing

In addition to AI features, Final Cut Pro 11 also includes tools for editing spatial video captured on the latest iPhones and Apple’s mixed-reality headset. With the ability to color correct footage, add effects, and adjust the positioning of titles, editors can take their projects to the next level.

Time-Saving Features

The new Final Cut Pro introduces time-saving features like Magnetic Timeline, which allows for quick rearrangement of clips while keeping audio in sync with video. Built specifically for Apple’s M-series chips, Final Cut Pro 11 offers improved playback capabilities for simultaneous 4K and 8K ProRes video streams.

Final Cut Pro for iPad

Alongside the release of Final Cut Pro 11, Apple is also launching Final Cut Pro for iPad 2.1. The touch-based interface has been enhanced for better light and color adjustments, as well as an improved workflow experience. Existing users can download the iPad version for free starting Wednesday.
