Google has named Preeti Lobana as the new head of its India business, a crucial role left vacant after Sanjay Gupta’s promotion to Asia-Pacific president in July. Lobana, previously the vice president of advertising technology at Google, will now lead the company’s efforts to promote AI products in India amidst fierce competition in the digital market. India is a key market for Google, with the company investing billions to connect hundreds of millions of Indians online and digitize local businesses.
However, Google is facing increased regulatory scrutiny in India, with fines totaling $162 million in 2022 for anticompetitive practices on Android. The Indian antitrust regulator has also opened an investigation into Google’s in-app billing policies, alleging unfair and discriminatory practices.
Roma Datta Chobey, who temporarily led the company, will resume her role in running the digital business unit. Before joining Google, Lobana had a career in banking at NatWest, American Express, and Standard Chartered.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment to shape the future with AI, unlocking unprecedented opportunities for businesses to boost productivity, solve critical challenges, and create innovative solutions,” Lobana wrote in a LinkedIn post.
