Meta is restructuring its AI department, splitting it into two new teams, as reported by Axios. The company’s AI personnel will now be part of either an AI products team or an AGI Foundations unit. It appears that no jobs have been eliminated.

AI Products Team vs AGI Foundations Unit

The AI products team will concentrate on consumer-facing initiatives such as the AI features in Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as Meta’s new standalone AI app. On the other hand, the AGI Foundations unit will focus on broader efforts, such as enhancing its Llama models.

Staying Competitive in the AI Space

In a bid to keep up with competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, Meta has taken steps to showcase its capabilities. The company recently rolled out a Llama for Startups program to encourage early-stage companies to utilize their products for generative AI applications. Furthermore, Meta’s LlamaCon event in April was designed to demonstrate its ability to compete with OpenAI.
