YouTube is currently testing a new two-person Premium subscription plan in select countries like India, France, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. This new tier, similar to Spotify’s Duo subscription, allows two people living together to share a Premium subscription at a reduced cost. The goal is to provide the benefits of YouTube Premium, such as ad-free viewing and background play, without the need for a full family plan.
This test launch comes as YouTube, owned by Google, aims to diversify its subscription offerings. In addition to the two-person Premium plan, YouTube recently introduced a new premium subscription tier called Premium Lite, offering ad-free viewing for $7.99 per month in certain countries.
Currently, YouTube Music and YouTube Premium combined have over 125 million users worldwide, including trial users. As with any test launch, it remains unclear if and when the two-person Premium plan will be expanded to more countries.
