GitHub and Microsoft are now part of the steering committee for MCP, Anthropic’s standard for linking AI models to data systems. This announcement was made at Microsoft’s Build 2025 conference, showcasing MCP’s growing influence in the AI industry. Both OpenAI and Google have already pledged their support for MCP in their AI products.

MCP enables models to access data from various sources like business tools, software, content repositories, and app development environments. This protocol empowers developers to establish bidirectional connections between data sources and AI-driven applications such as chatbots. Developers can create “MCP servers” to expose data and develop “MCP clients” (e.g., apps and workflows) to connect to these servers as needed.

Microsoft and GitHub have committed to offering extensive first-party support for MCP on their platforms and services, including Microsoft Azure and Windows 11. Windows will soon feature MCP integrations that allow developers to expose app functionalities to MCP-enabled models. This integration will encompass Windows system functionalities like File System, Windowing, and Windows Subsystem for Linux as MCP servers for models to interact with.

Furthermore, Microsoft and GitHub are actively contributing to the MCP standard. Microsoft’s identity and security teams collaborated with Anthropic and the MCP community to design an updated authorization spec for securely connecting MCP-connected apps to servers. This spec enables users to utilize trusted sign-in methods to grant AI-powered apps access to data and services like personal storage drives and subscription plans.

GitHub, on the other hand, worked with the MCP steering committee to create a registry service for MCP servers. This service allows developers to set up public or private centralized repositories for MCP server entries, facilitating the discovery and management of various MCP implementations along with their respective configurations.
