Jack Dorsey Creates Bitchat Messaging App
Block CEO and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey recently announced the development of a new messaging app called Bitchat. This app operates through Bluetooth mesh networks, allowing users to send messages even without Wi-Fi or cell reception.
Extended Range and Encryption
Unlike traditional Bluetooth messaging apps with a limited range of around 100 meters, Bitchat boasts an extended range of up to 300 meters, or 984 feet. This makes it particularly useful in situations like crowded music festivals where cell service is unreliable. Both Bitchat and another popular app, Bridgefy, emphasize end-to-end encryption to ensure user privacy and security.
Decentralizing Tech and Future Plans
Jack Dorsey’s involvement in developing Bitchat is in line with his long-standing interest in decentralizing technology. As a strong advocate for Bitcoin and having founded the precursor to Bluesky during his time at Twitter, Dorsey’s foray into creating Bitchat aligns with his vision for a more decentralized digital landscape. The app is currently in beta testing through Apple’s TestFlight, with Dorsey indicating that a full release is pending after further review.
