As artificial intelligence (AI) technology continues to be integrated into the corporate world, Apple is introducing new tools that will allow businesses to have more precise control over how and where their employees utilize AI. With the upcoming release of Apple’s software updates in September, the company is offering enterprise customers the option to configure the use of an enterprise version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Enhanced Control Over AI Integration
Apple has observed a growing demand for ChatGPT for Enterprise, a service provided by OpenAI that now boasts over 5 million business customers. These companies leverage the AI service to interact with their internal data through AI agents.
One noteworthy aspect of Apple’s integration with ChatGPT for Enterprise is the flexibility it provides. Rather than being restricted to only allowing or blocking ChatGPT, Apple’s support documents indicate that IT administrators can manage access to any “external” AI provider, not limited to OpenAI. This opens up possibilities for Apple to collaborate with other major AI players in the enterprise sector without requiring protocol-level modifications.
Empowering Businesses with AI Features
Apple’s introduction of new AI capabilities targeted at end users of its devices, such as writing tools and visual intelligence, is accompanied by mechanisms for IT departments to regulate access to these features.
While Apple places confidence in its Private Cloud Compute architecture, it acknowledges that organizations may require time to implement changes to sensitive systems and data. Consequently, Apple allows businesses to determine whether data processing should occur in the cloud or on the device, granting them autonomy over this decision-making process.
In addition to empowering businesses to selectively enable AI features, this setup enables them to dictate whether employees’ AI requests should be directed to ChatGPT’s cloud service, even in the absence of an enterprise agreement with OpenAI. This seamless integration of ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence across Apple’s software platform streamlines AI requests handling. Moreover, Apple’s forthcoming updates for enterprise users encompass a range of novel features, including an API for Apple Business Manager service, enhanced Device Management tools, and the introduction of Apple’s Return to Service solution.
