Snapchat has announced that it is introducing enhanced location sharing to its parental controls hub, Family Center. This new addition allows parents to receive alerts within the app when their teen departs from or arrives at designated locations, such as school. Previously, parents had to navigate through Snap Map or their teen’s profile to track their location, but now they can easily monitor their child’s whereabouts directly within Family Center.
When parents set up this feature for the first time, they send a request to their teen to share their live location. Notifications can be set for up to three locations on the Snap Map, enabling parents to receive alerts when their child leaves school, arrives at a specific activity, and heads home. This move by Snapchat seems to be a direct challenge to Life360, a popular service that allows families to track each other’s locations and receive updates on arrivals and departures.
In a blog post, Snapchat stated, “We’re adding travel notifications to Family Center to give parents more peace of mind knowing their teen has arrived at class, left sports practice on time, or even returned home after a night with friends.” Additionally, parents will soon have the ability to see who their teen is sharing their location with on Snapchat, with the platform prompting users to review their location-sharing settings.
Snapchat reports that over 350 million people use Snap Map every month and believes that these new features will help families stay connected while on the go. The rollout of these features will take place over the next few weeks, as Snapchat continues to enhance its Family Center, initially launched in 2022 to address concerns about the protection of young users on social media apps. Despite occasional updates to the hub, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel revealed that only a fraction of parents are utilizing its Family Center supervision controls, highlighting the importance of raising awareness about these tools.
