The recent marketplace crackdown on games with adult content has sparked outcry, with Mastercard pushing back against allegations of evaluating games or imposing restrictions on game creator sites and platforms. The company clarified that while it does require merchants to have controls to prevent unlawful purchases, it has not directly intervened in game content evaluation. This response came after an advocacy group criticized PayPal, Mastercard, Visa, and other companies for allowing the sale of controversial games depicting rape, incest, and child sexual abuse.
Steam and Itch.io also made moves to address the issue, with Steam announcing a ban on games violating payment processors’ rules and Itch.io removing adult content games from search and browse pages. Despite Mastercard’s statement suggesting it was not pressuring game marketplaces, Valve revealed that the company had not communicated directly with them. Instead, payment processors relayed concerns about the risk to the Mastercard brand due to illegal or brand-damaging transactions.
In response to ongoing negotiations with payment processors like Stripe, Itch.io is working to re-index free games with adult content. However, Stripe cited its inability to support sexually explicit content due to restrictions from banking partners.
