After launching AI overviews in the U.S., Google is now extending the AI-powered search summaries to six additional countries: India, Brazil, Japan, the U.K., Indonesia, and Mexico. These markets will also receive local language support for AI overviews.
Google is redesigning how it presents source material links by adding icons of sites on the upper right-hand side of the AI overview on both desktop and mobile. Users can click on these icons to visit the links mentioned in an AI overview and explore more on the topic. The company is also experimenting with displaying relevant links within the text of AI overviews to drive more traffic to external sites.
Google has faced criticism for not prominently featuring links to sources while displaying summaries generated by AI-powered tools. News outlets have called out search tools like Perplexity AI for plagiarism and unethical web scraping. Despite this, Perplexity’s CBO mentioned that a significant percentage of visitors are clicking on external links. Google, however, has not disclosed how much traffic its AI-powered search results are generating.
India-specific features have been added to AI overviews with this expansion. Google introduced a toggle feature allowing users to switch between Hindi and English results without leaving the page. Indian users can also listen to AI overview responses by tapping the “Listen” button, a feature that is more popular among Indian users compared to other countries.
During early testing, some queries in Hindi did not work when changing sentence structure or words. We have reached out to Google for more information on its approach to answering questions in Hindi and will update the story accordingly.
