Cognition’s AI coding agent Devin has made a significant breakthrough by landing a major customer: Goldman Sachs. The bank’s CIO, Marco Argenti, revealed to CNBC that they are planning to integrate Devin into their workforce, describing it as their new employee. With intentions to deploy hundreds of instances of Devin, potentially scaling up to thousands, Goldman Sachs is making a bold move in the realm of artificial intelligence.
Goldman Sachs, known for its innovative approach in a traditionally conservative financial industry, has been ahead of the curve by utilizing developer copilots since at least 2024. Despite initial concerns about Devin’s capabilities, Cognition has been actively improving its performance. The latest version, 2.1, is optimized for handling large codebases that provide the necessary context for optimal execution.
It’s important to note that Devin is not meant to replace human developers at the bank. Argenti envisions a “hybrid” workforce, where instances of AI like Devin will work alongside human counterparts, enhancing their productivity under human supervision. This collaborative approach highlights the potential for AI to complement and augment human skills in the workplace.
