General Motors’ Electric Vehicle Sales Surge in Q2
General Motors had a successful second quarter in the U.S. electric vehicle market, selling 4,508 electric Hummer trucks and SUVs. This strong performance puts GM in close competition with Ford’s F-150 Lightning, despite a significant price difference between the two brands.
GM’s electric vehicle sales in the quarter were part of an overall positive trend for the company. Data released recently showed that GM was one of the few automakers to experience a genuine year-over-year increase in U.S. EV sales. The company also sold 17,420 electric Equinox SUVs, 3,056 electric Silverado pickups, 6,549 Blazer EVs, 1,810 Escalade IQ EVs, and 1,524 electric GMC Sierra trucks.
Additionally, GM’s commercial EV division, BrightDrop, saw a significant boost in sales, with 1,318 electric vans sold during the quarter compared to 490 in the previous year. Overall, GM’s EV sales for the quarter increased by 111%, driven in part by the introduction of new models and improved availability.
In contrast, many other automakers saw a decline in EV sales in the second quarter of 2025. Ford, for example, experienced a 31% drop in U.S. EV sales, with the E-Transit vans and F-150 Lightning losing popularity. Despite an increase in hybrid vehicle sales, Ford’s overall EV sales for the year were down compared to the same period in 2024.
The challenging environment for EV sales in the U.S. is further compounded by the potential removal of federal tax incentives and subsidies. Even successful brands like Hyundai reported a decline in sales for their electric vehicles compared to the previous year. Ford, in particular, is facing pressure to revamp its EV lineup to remain competitive in the market.
As the industry navigates these challenges, it is evident that GM’s strong performance in the second quarter positions the company as a key player in the evolving electric vehicle landscape.
