Google announced on Friday that it will be replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android phones later this year. According to a blog post, more users will be upgraded to Gemini in the coming months, with Assistant becoming inaccessible on most mobile devices and app stores. The company also mentioned that tablets, cars, and devices connected to phones will also be upgraded to Gemini, along with a new experience for home devices like speakers, displays, and TVs.
Google will share more details with users in the next few months, but until then, Assistant will continue to operate on the mentioned devices. The company has been working on improving the Gemini user experience, adding features like music playback, timers, and actions directly from the lock screen.
The decision to switch to Gemini was expected, especially since Google launched its Pixel 9 smartphone line with Gemini as the default virtual assistant. Google claims that Gemini has more advanced capabilities than Assistant and provides new ways to access help and information through tools like Gemini Live and Deep Research.
