Over the past three days, 20 startups competed in the highly competitive Startup Battlefield at TechCrunch Disrupt. These companies were chosen as the top performers out of 200 startups and vied for the chance to win the Startup Battlefield Cup and $100,000. Following rigorous pitching sessions, a winner has emerged.
The startups selected to participate in the Startup Battlefield underwent a rigorous selection process. Each company presented a live demo to multiple groups of venture capitalists and tech leaders acting as judges, all aiming to win the $100,000 prize and the prestigious Disrupt Cup.
After careful consideration, TechCrunch editors reviewed the judges’ feedback and narrowed down the list to five finalists: GeCKo Materials, Luna, MabLab, Salva Health, and Stitch3D. These finalists showcased their products in front of a panel of judges, which included prominent figures in the tech and venture capital industry.
The winner of TechCrunch Startup Battlefield 2024 is Salva Health. Founded by Valentina Agudelo, Salva Health was created to address the disparity in breast cancer survival rates in Latin America compared to developed countries. The company developed a portable device for early detection of breast cancer, aiming to improve survival rates in regions with limited access to diagnostic tools.
Runner-up in the competition was GeCKo Materials, a startup founded by Capella Kerst. The company has developed a super-strong dry adhesive inspired by geckos’ feet, offering a unique alternative to traditional adhesives. GeCKo Materials’ innovation has the potential to revolutionize various industries with its versatile and durable adhesive solution.
Both Salva Health and GeCKo Materials join the prestigious ranks of past Startup Battlefield winners, such as Dropbox, Discord, Cloudflare, and Mint. The Startup Battlefield program has seen over 1,500 alumni participate, collectively raising over $29 billion in funding and achieving more than 200 successful exits.
