A bunch of Canadian news outlets are in a tizzy, suing OpenAI for allegedly using their content without permission. The Toronto Star, CBC, Globe and Mail, and others are seeking damages and demanding that OpenAI stop using their stuff. They claim that OpenAI has been snagging content from their websites to train ChatGPT, their fancy language model. The news companies are accusing OpenAI of swiping their hard work for its own gain, without even asking nicely. This isn’t the first time OpenAI has been in hot water – The New York Times, YouTube creators, and even comedian Sarah Silverman have also taken legal action. While OpenAI has deals with some publishers, the Canadian companies say they never got a dime from them. OpenAI, on the other hand, says that ChatGPT is a beloved tool used by millions worldwide and that they play nice with news publishers. But a recent study by Columbia University found that ChatGPT isn’t always accurate with its content, causing even more drama.
