OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever has announced that he will be stepping into the CEO role at Safe Superintelligence, the AI startup he founded in 2024. Following the exit of co-founder and CEO Daniel Gross on June 29, Sutskever confirmed the changes in a post on X. Daniel Levy, another co-founder of Safe Superintelligence, will be taking on the role of president.
### The Transition
The news comes after reports of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s interest in hiring Gross and potentially acquiring Safe Superintelligence. Sutskever addressed these rumors, emphasizing the startup’s commitment to its work and mission. “We have the compute, we have the team, and we know what to do. Together we will keep building safe superintelligence,” he stated.
### The Focus
Safe Superintelligence prides itself on being the world’s first straight-shot SSI lab, solely dedicated to developing safe superintelligence. Sutskever founded the startup after leaving OpenAI, where he was involved in the removal of CEO Sam Altman. Meanwhile, Meta Superintelligence Labs, led by Zuckerberg, aims to leverage AI technology across its various products.
### Future Prospects
With Gross potentially joining Meta’s AI team, Sutskever faces the challenge of leading Safe Superintelligence and ensuring its continued success. As the new CEO, he will be tasked with securing funding, attracting top talent, and managing the technical team. Despite the changes, Safe Superintelligence remains focused on its mission of creating safe and intelligent AI technologies.
