Roblox announced that 45% of its daily active users have completed mandatory facial age verification as of January 31, a measure implemented to enhance platform safety and resolve multi-state legal challenges regarding the exposure of minors to explicit content. This milestone follows the introduction of mandatory checks for chat access, marking a significant shift in how the platform manages its massive user base.

Legal Pressure and Child Safety Requirements

The implementation of these age checks follows a series of lawsuits filed by the attorneys general of Kentucky, Texas, and Louisiana. These legal actions were filed in response to reports suggesting that Roblox was exposing young users to risks including grooming and dangerous environments.

How Roblox Facial Verification Works

To complete the verification, users must grant the Roblox app camera access and follow specific on-screen instructions. The facial verification is managed by Persona, a third-party vendor. Roblox states that this partner deletes all images and videos once the authentication process is finalized.

Age-Based Chat Groupings

Verified users are assigned to one of six age categories: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21 plus. Communication is restricted to peers within the same group or those in the immediate adjacent categories. For example, a user in the 9-12 group can only interact with those in the under 9, 9-12, and 13-15 brackets.

If the automated system incorrectly estimates a user’s age, an appeal process is available. Verification can then be completed via official ID documentation or through parental control settings.

Demographic Shift and Revenue Growth

Data from the Q4 2025 earnings release indicates that the verified user base is younger than previously self-reported. Among verified users, 35% are under 13, 38% are between 13 and 17, and 27% are over 18.

Roblox CEO David Baszucki noted that the 18-plus demographic is growing at over 50% and monetizes 40% higher than younger cohorts. Consequently, the company is optimizing the platform for high-revenue genres such as RPGs, shooters, sports, and racing to capitalize on this older audience.

Advanced Background Monitoring Systems

Despite the new controls, reports from Wired highlighted loopholes, such as eBay listings for pre-verified accounts for minors. Eliza Jacobs, Roblox’s senior director of product policy, stated that the company employs continuous background systems to detect activity inconsistent with a user’s verified age.

Keystroke Analysis and Behavioral Signals

The platform monitors various signals, including game choices and interaction partners. Jacobs revealed that Roblox uses keystroke analysis, as typing patterns differ significantly between adults and children. Additionally, the system analyzes emoji usage; younger users frequently place emojis in the middle of sentences, whereas older users typically use them as punctuation at the end.

Roblox maintains that it will continue to update these safety protocols to mitigate evolving risks and ensure the accuracy of user data across the platform.
