TikTok announced on Wednesday the launch of a new “Local Feed” for its United States audience, designed to deliver news, travel, shopping, and dining content based on a user’s precise geographical location. This feature follows a recent update to the platform’s terms of service under its new U.S. joint venture, which established the framework for collecting more accurate positioning data.
The company confirmed that the primary objective for requesting precise location information is to power this localized discovery experience. To address potential privacy concerns, TikTok emphasized that the feature is strictly opt-in; the default setting is “off,” and users maintain full control over whether they share their specific coordinates with the application.
Personalized Local Content and Global Expansion
The U.S. debut follows a successful rollout in December across several European markets, including the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany. According to the official announcement, the feed aims to foster community connections by filtering posts based on location, topic relevance, and recency.

Users can expect a current stream of information, ranging from new restaurant recommendations and local events to shopping suggestions. This strategy positions TikTok as a real-time utility for physical navigation and local commerce, moving beyond purely algorithmic entertainment.
Strategic Impact on Small Businesses and Advertising
The Local Feed is a central component of TikTok’s effort to integrate small businesses more deeply into the platform as both creators and advertisers. By driving foot traffic to brick-and-mortar locations, TikTok aims to demonstrate its economic value to regulators, mirroring defense strategies used by other major tech firms like Meta.
Economic Data and Community Growth
Current data suggests a significant footprint: 7.5 million businesses utilize the app to reach customers, supporting over 28 million workers according to a 2025 Oxford Economics report.
Furthermore, research from the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council indicates that 84% of small business users credit the platform with business growth. While 75% use the app to reach customers outside their immediate area, 74% specifically value TikTok for connecting with their local community.
User Privacy and Implementation Protocols
Upon first accessing the Local Feed, users will encounter a permission prompt regarding location data. On iOS, this allows for standard choices: “allow once,” “allow while using the app,” or “don’t allow.” TikTok maintains that this approach aligns with industry standards for modern applications providing relevant local experiences.
The platform has implemented specific safeguards for this rollout. The Local Feed is restricted to users aged 18 and older, and data collection only occurs while the application is actively in use. Despite these measures, the timing of the request—following a major ownership transition in the U.S.—continues to draw scrutiny regarding the balance between localized utility and data privacy.
