Irish Big Tech Watchdog Investigates Platforms’ Content Reporting After DSA Complaints

Ireland’s Media Watchdog Investigates Major Tech Platforms

Ireland’s media regulator, overseeing tech giants’ compliance with the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), is investigating how major platforms handle reports of illegal content. One in three DSA complaints since February relate to difficulties in reporting such content online. The review includes platforms like Dropbox, Pinterest, TikTok, and YouTube.

Content Reporting Tools Under Scrutiny

The DSA mandates that platforms have user-friendly systems to report problems and accessible points of contact for users. Some platforms, like X and Meta, have faced investigations over compliance with these rules. The CNM’s review could lead to wider enforcement actions on platforms found in violation.

Ensuring Online Safety Compliance

The Irish regulator’s review aims to ensure platforms comply with DSA requirements. If platforms fail to address shortcomings, formal investigations and sanctions, including fines, may follow. Niamh Hodnett, online safety commissioner at CNM, emphasizes the importance of holding platforms accountable for online safety. Reporting illegal content is essential for creating a safe digital environment for all users.
