Texas governor signs online safety bill despite opposition from Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Apple and Google App Stores Required to Verify Users’ Age

Gov. Abbott of Texas has signed into law an online child safety bill that will impact Apple and Google’s app stores. The new law mandates age verification and parental approval for minors to download or make in-app purchases, starting on January 1.

Apple’s Opposition and Lobbying Efforts

Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly reached out to Gov. Abbott in an attempt to influence the law’s outcome after it passed the Texas legislature. Apple, along with Google, expressed concerns about user privacy and collaborated with interest groups to oppose the legislation. Similar efforts in Louisiana were successful last year, but Utah has already implemented a comparable law.

With more states considering their own versions of the app store bill, the debate over online child safety measures continues to evolve.
