Waymo robotaxis and Lime e-scooters torched in LA protests

Waymo Robotaxis and Lime e-Scooters Targeted in Los Angeles

A group of protesters in downtown Los Angeles attacked several Waymo robotaxis and Lime e-scooters over the weekend, amidst unrest spurred by protests against immigration raids in the city. The incidents involved vandalism, including setting cars on fire, slashing tires, and spray-painting anti-ICE messages.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the besieged Waymo vehicles honked their horns in a coordinated cacophony as they were attacked. Some Lime e-scooters were also thrown into the burning vehicles, releasing toxic gases from lithium-ion batteries.

Waymo Responds to Vandalism

Waymo stated that it is in touch with the LAPD and plans to pursue criminal prosecution and damages from those responsible for vandalizing its vehicles. The company did not confirm if it would provide camera footage to authorities for identifying the protesters.

Reports indicate that Waymo has removed its vehicles from LA and suspended its service. Since launching its self-driving ride-hail service in November 2024, Waymo’s vehicles have been targeted in acts of vandalism in various cities.
